Intervista a CON e CANTWO in occasione della bella mostra berlinese!
Intro di Doppio: con questo articolo abbiamo il piacere di inaugurare un bella e, speriamo, duratura collaborazione con NAPAL vero iniziatore del writing a Roma e in Italia (il primo pezzo risale al 1986 se non erro)... e tutt'ora sulla scena, italiana ed estera...
BOMBS AWAY SHOW! Berlino dal 17 Aprile al 3 Maggio.

Il BOMBS AWAY SHOW è una mostra curata dalla Strychnin Gallery di Berlino ed organizzata dal writer TIM CONLON, noto ai più come CON. Nella mostra vengono esposti i lavori di più di 20 writer, tra cui mostri sacri come SEEN, IZ THE WIZ, WANE, WEB e writer prevalentemente della scena dei “FREIGHT” (treni merci) statunitensi, come AREK, BASER, BIG5, CAMEO, CON, DAKS, ELKAMINO, MYTH, RAMS, REI21, SBONE, ENUE, JASE, KAPUT, KING157, SMASH74, SOVIET, STAK e WINK e infine a rappresentare la scena tedesca abbiamo il celebre CAN2. La mostra si presenta come un buon tentativo di riunire i lavori di diverse generazioni di Train Writer della scena americana. Nella notte dell'inaugurazione si respirava un' atmosfera molto positiva, ed abbiamo avuto la fortuna di sapere qualcosa di più della mostra direttamente all'organizzatore CON e da CAN2.
Sentiamo cosa ci hanno detto al riguardo:
NAPS – Ciao CON, puoi spiegarci come è stata messa in piedi la mostra BOMBS AWAY? CON - La mostra nasce con l'intento di mettere insieme i lavori di writers che hanno fatto la storia della scena dei treni negli States. Quindi partiamo da lavori della vecchia scuola newyorkese a lavori di writer che sono stati tra i primi a portare il writing sui “FREIGHT”.
NAPS – Come ha avuto inizio e come si è sviluppata la scena freight in America? CON - La scena freight anche se poco conosciuta in Europa, è la più grande scena che c'è al momento in America. Noi abbiamo cominciato nei primi anni '90 perché abbiamo capito che facendo i freight i nostri nomi viaggiavano da una città all'altra in America e in più i pezzi rimanevano puliti per tanto tempo, quindi uno faceva un pezzo magari a Baltimora e ti viaggiava fino a L.A. o Seattle o New York. E così facendo ogni città ha cominciato a creare il suo stile. Diciamo che i treni merci sono stati la nostra rete prima dell'era di internet.
NAPS – Come è la scena del writing oggi in America? CON - Beh diciamo che tuttora l'opinione pubblica in America ha una visione negativa del writing perché c'è questa visione distorta che associa il writing sempre solo alle gang, in più c'è molta repressione da parte della politica e polizia, al momento vengono cancellate dalle amministrazioni comunali anche murate fatte con tanto di permesso del proprietario del muro! E' una situazione assurda! Quindi quello che noi cerchiamo di fare è organizzare mostre come questa per tentare di far capire alle persone che il writing è una forma d'arte.
NAPS – Chi sono i writer presenti questa sera alla mostra e perché alcuni non sono qui? CON - Questa sera qui ci sono AREK, SOVIET, RAMS, CAN2 ed io. Ovviamente tutti i writer che espongono nella mostra avrebbero voluto essere qui, ma molti sono impegnati, come per esempio SEEN che non è potuto venire perché in questi giorni deve fare un lavoro con la CARHARTT.
NAPS – Avete intenzione di portare questa mostra anche in altre città europee? CON - Sì certo l'idea di portarla anche altrove c'è la Strychnin Gallery... ha anche sede a Londra e ha dei contatti anche a Parigi, quindi se ci riusciamo vorremmo farla crescere come mostra e portarla anche in altre città.
NAPS – Tu al momento hai 33 anni e dipingi dal '93, cosa ti spinge ancora a dipingere e cosa ti fa rimanere ancora nel mondo del writing? CON - beh io non so se è lo stesso per te ma il writing è ancora una cosa che sento il bisogno di fare! Mi rendo conto che quando vengo incastrato troppo dentro alla routine di lavorare tutti i giorni sento il bisogno di evadere e andare a dipingere! Per me è una valvola di sfogo, mi serve per la mia pace mentale...
NAPS – E nel tuo caso, CAN2, cosa è che ti spinge ancora a continuare a dipingere dopo tutti questi anni, visto che lo fai dall' '83 ? CAN2 – Ma, per me è sempre stato un fattore di dipingere quello che piace a me è cercare di migliorare il mio stile, sicuramente l'essere invitato a molti eventi e mostre è uno stimolo per andare avanti. Ma ho sempre dipinto per la mia soddisfazione personale. Diciamo che amo il concetto che posso dare vita a un semplice muro con la mia arte.
NAPS - Quando si parla di stile cos'è per te la cosa più importante? CAN2 - Per me stile significa avere delle lettere con flow e una buona colorazione. Mi piace che il pezzo sia leggibile, non capisco i writer che scrivono il loro nome con lettering indecifrabile... trovo che un pezzo ha più impatto quando lo puoi leggere e anche ricordare più facilmente. Poi sono un tedesco quindi il pezzo deve essere pulito e dettagliato.
NAPS – Ho notato che ultimamente stai dipingendo sempre più tele. Una volta ho sentito JON ONE dire che le tele sono importanti per preservare la nostra arte, tu cosa ne pensi a proposito? CAN2 – Certo! Sono pienamente d'accordo con questo concetto! A me piace dipingere muri, ma mi rendo conto perfettamente che poi chiunque può andare a rovinare il pezzo che hai fatto... invece con una tela la mia arte può essere conservata per tanti anni. Quindi trovo che le tele siano fighe.
NAPS – Alcuni writer a volte tendono a criticare quei writer che cominciano a guadagnarsi da vivere con i graffiti dicendo che sono dei venduti e che stanno rovinando la scena del writing... Cosa ne pensi al riguardo? CAN2 – Tutti gli scazzi che nascono nella scena del writing sono solo frutto dell'invidia. Il writing è una cosa che faccio da tanti anni, da molto prima che riuscissi a guadagnarmi da vivere con queste cose, quindi perché non dovrei cercare di camparmi con qualcosa che faccio e amo da così tanto tempo?? Per me non sono le mostre o i lavori su commissione a rovinare il mondo del writing, ma la gelosia e l'invidia.
NAPS – Tu sei stato ormai in Italia diverse volte, cosa ne pensi della scena Italiana? CAN2 – Io amo gli Italiani! Perché sono simpatici e si godono la vita, poi trovo che stilisticamente l'Italia abbia ancora il suo stile e il suo VIBE e ho notato anche che siete molto bravi a disegnare i puppet. L'anno scorso sono stato il giudice del WRITE 4 GOLD di Roma, ed è stato un ruolo difficile da coprire perché non volevo che nessuno si offendesse del mio giudizio. Poi quella è una competizione dove solo uno può vincere, ma le persone dovrebbero anche rendersi conto che è solo un gioco e quindi viversela tranquillamente..
NAPS – Tu ormai sei un membro della U.A. crew da tanti anni. Come sei entrato in questa crew e quali ricordi hai al riguardo? CAN2 – SEEN è sempre stato un idolo per me e penso sia un punto di riferimento per chiunque abbia mai preso uno spray in mano. Quindi ricordo molto bene la prima volta che ho avuto la fortuna di dipingere con lui : era nel '96 è lui è sempre stato molto tranquillo con me. Quindi oggi sono fiero di poter rappresentare una crew così importante in giro per il mondo.
NAPS – Avete delle ultime battute o qualcosa da dire alla scena italiana? CON - Certo! spero di tornare presto in Italia e di dipingere con te a Roma! CAN2 - Ah vorrei tanto sapere fare un discorso in italiano e poter dire qualcosa di fico! L'unica cosa che so è un po di spagnolo ma so solo dire -” una cerveza por favor!” che significa “datemi una birra”! NAPS – Haha certo andiamo a prenderci una birra! Grazie per l'intervista!

The BOMBS AWAY SHOW is a Strychnin Gallery exhibition curated by Yasha Young and American writer Tim Conlon aka “CON” . There are the art works of over 20 international writers, from New York old school legends like SEEN, IZ the WIZ, WANE, WEBONE,masters of the US freight scene like AREK, BASER, BIG5, CAMEO, CON,DAKS,ELKAMINO,MYTH,RAMS,REI21,SBONE,ENUE,JASE,KAPUT,KING157,SMASH74,SOVIET,STAK,WINK and last but not least world wide known CAN2! The show contains an overwhelming quantity of great canvases and painted model trains made by the writers and is a good attempt to put together the works of different generations of train writers mainly from the U.S. On the opening night the good vibes were banging and we hade the luck to learn more about the BOMBS AWAY show directly from “CON” and “CAN2”. Let's check out what these two cool writers have to say:
NAPS - So CON tell us, how did the BOMBS AWAY show come together? CON - Well, the idea was to show different generations of train writers across the U.S. from the New York old school to the writers like us who started the freight train scene in the early 90's.
NAPS – How did the freight train scene start and evolve in the U.S.? CON - The freights were our net before the internet era, as the subways in New York would take your name to one side of town to the other, with freights we realized that our name was travelling from one city to another! And also it would be running for a long time without getting buffed! So you could paint a train in Baltimore and it would end up maybe in L.A. or Seattle or New York and just from benching you could see all these trains from different cities and see the different styles from town to town.
NAPS –How is the graff scene today in the U.S.? CON -Well the american public opinion is still very narrow minded when it comes to graff because they tend to associate it with gangs and violence. And also a lot of the public administrations are closing down even legal walls and places that have graff. But luckily with shows like these we are trying to open people's minds and make them understand that graff is an art form and should be preserved as an art form.
NAPS - Who are the writers that are here tonight at the opening of the show and who didn't make it? CON - Tonight here we have SOVIET,RAMS,AREK,CAN2 and me, many writers couldn't make it here cause they were busy, like SEEN who is doing a publicity job in France at the moment.
NAPS – Are there intensions to take the BOMBS AWAY show to other cities besides Berlin? CON - Yes, there is the idea to take the show in other cities, the Strychnin gallery has a gallery also in London and there is also the idea of taking the exhibition to Paris, so we will see what happens in the future..
NAPS - So tell me you are 33 years old and painting since '93 what keeps you going and keeps you involved in graff? CON - Let me say that I don't know about you but for me it's still something i need to do! When I get stuck working too much I just have to break out and go paint, so it takes away the pressure and it gives me a mental release..
NAPS –And you CAN2 what is it that keeps you going strong after all these years? You have been consistent since '83... now what are your motivations? CAN2 – For me it's always been about painting what I like and getting better at my craft. So that's always been my main drive over the years, to work on my style. And l love the feeling that I can bring a wall to life with my graff!
NAPS – What is the most important thing to you when it comes to style? CAN2 – Well for me style is having good letter form and good colours, I like my graff to be readable because I don't understand why writers write their name and you can't read the style... I find it to have more impact when you can read it and remember it. Plus for me it has to be clean and crisp with good detail.
NAPS – I see that lately you have been painting more canvases. I once heard JON ONE say that canvases are important to preserve our work in time, what do you think of that? CAN2 – Sure I agree totaly with that concept! Because if I go paint a wall anyone can go ruin it and write over it, instead with a canvas my work will remain intact over the years. So I find canvases cool.
NAPS – Writers sometimes tend to criticize other writers who start making a living out of graff, saying they are sellouts and things like that... what do you think about that? CAN2 - For me all the beef that starts out in the graffiti scene at the end is only about jealuosy. Graff is something that I have been doing for so long, way before I was making any money out of it and I would still be doing it even if I wasn't living with it today. So from the moment that I love it so much why shouldn't I try to make a living from something I love so much doing? Art shows and jobs aren't ruining the graff scene today, jealuosy and envy are really ruining it more.
NAPS - You have been to Italy a few times now painting and have seen the italian graff, what do you think about the italian graff scene? CAN2 - I love the italian people! Because they are cool and friendly and I feel that Italy still has its own style and vibe, and also see that they are good when it comes to drawing characters. Last year I was the judge at the Rome WRITE 4 GOLD contest and it was a difficult position to be in... because it's a competition where only one can win so I didn't want the people who didn't win to feel offended by my judgement, but people should take it cool and understand that it's just a game.
NAPS – You have been a member of the U.A. crew now for many years : how did that happen and what was the feeling of entering such an important crew? CAN2 – Seen has always been an idol for me and I think for almost anyone who has picked up a spray can in his life! So I clearly remember when I got the the luck to paint with him in New York in '96. He has always been cool ad after a while he let me enter U.A., so for me it was like entering the the highest level I could go with my graff! so today I'm proud to represent U.A. around the world.
NAPS – Any last words or shout outs to the italian scene?? CON - Sure I hope I will be back in Italy and come paint in Rome! CAN2- I wish I could say a speech in Italian but I don't know how to...the only thing I know that comes close is spanish... I can say-”una cerveza por favor!” that means give me a beer please! NAPS – Haha sure let's go get a beer...thanx CON and thanx CAN2 !peace.
