Cab L.O.D veterano della vecchia scuola di L.A. si racconta.
Naps -Allora CAB raccontaci come e quando sei diventato un writer?
Cab – I primi graffiti che ho mai visto erano in East L.A. gang come Prima Flats, White Fence e I Maravillas che erano vecchie gang che giravano a Los Angeles dagli anni '30 sicuramente mi hanno influenzato,per un periodo agli inizi ho fatto un po' di “Cholo” (gang) writing, ai quei tempi fine '70 inizio '80 c'era molta violenza e traffici di droga, Poi nel '84 ho visto Beet Street e come per molti è stato come scoprire un mondo!Ho cominciato prima con il breaking poi con il writing, sicuramente quando ho cominciato ero più' un bomber che un writer poi nel '88 ho cominciato a scriver CAB ed è rimasto il mio nome fino ad oggi. Una delle mie prime crew fu T.N.T di L.A. ed il nostro unico scopo nella vita era di rubare spray e andare a bombare ogni notte!
Naps – Quali sono le tue crew ora e cosa significa per te stare in una crew?
Cab – ora sono in K2S e LOD,“Kill to sucseed" e "Lokes on Dope" per sono come la mia famiglia di Los Angeles.
Naps – Te sei un writer ormai da tanti anni,cosa ti fa continuare e cosa pensi sia Cambiato nel mondo del writing nel tempo?
Cab – Dipingo per esprimermi è restare creativo,e divertirmi con gli amici,per me il wiriting ha un valore molto personale non lo faccio solo per il “FAME”... non è una corsa a chi fa piu' pezzi anche se ne ho fatti veramente tanti. prima sicuramente ero piu' un bomber ora sono sento che sono salito di livello e mi interessa piu fare dei bei pezzi e lavorare sul mio stile. La scena di L.A è sempre stata molto grande con molti writer di altissimo livello. Forse l'unica cosa che è cambiata nel tempo e che la polizia rompe più le palle...
Naps – Parlaci della scena di L.A.
Cab -Per me la scena di L.A. è sempre state Fresh, Ci sono un sacco di nuovi writer che fanno cose molto fiche è anche writer della vecchia guardia che continuano a lavorare sul loro stile. Io ho un buon rapporto con tutti i writer di L.A. poi ci sono persone come Seventh Letter,Revok,Rime,Risky,Etc che stanno portanto i loro lavoro fuori da L.A. in giro per tutto il mondo quindi hanno il mio rispetto. Diciamo che sono contento di far parte di una scena cosi' grande.
Naps – Quando si tratta di stile hai molto gusto nel comporre i tuoi pezzi, cosa' è importante per te quando si tratta di stile ? e che consigli dai alle nuove leve?
Cab – Quando si tratta di stile a me piacciono tutti da quelli piu' wild assurdi alle cose più semplici, per quanto riguarda il mio stile io preferisco cose semplici che tutti possono leggere,comunque avere una sorta di stile personale è importante secondo me perché è per quello che sarai conosciuto. Poi alle nuove leve consiglio di non avere troppo fretta ma di lavorare sodo e di ascoltare i consigli di chi sta nell'ambiente da piu' tempo di te,non crossare altri writer perché ti crea solo problemi è soprattutto avere rispetto di chi ha creato questa culture e gli è stato fedele nei anni.
Naps – Dipingi altre cose oltre a muri e treni?
Cab – Si faccio anche tele, penso siano vitali per un artista anche se non le vende. Ho anche fatto una linea di magliette chiamata CABWEAR ora faccio varie magliette che si possono comprare sul mio myspace (www.myspace.com/cabwear) la stampa è molto buona e stanno vendendo molto bene. Ora ho fatto anche dei anelli con il logo LOD della mia crew ,sicuramente in futuro ci saranno molti progetti CABWEAR.
Naps – L.A. è conosciuta per molte cose positive e negative,ma soprattutto per il la scena gangsta rap. Cosa pensi della scena e cosa pensi di persone in giro per tutto il mondo che cercano di emulare questa scena fingendosi piccoli Gansta?
Cab – Si sicuramente L.A. è conosciuta per le belle donne ed il sole ma anche purtroppo per le gang... si lo so bene che ci sono ragazzi in giro per tutto il mondo che credono di comportarsi come ganster e credono che sia fico è divertente, ma ti assicuro che non c'è nulla di divertente nel crimine e nel essere arrestato. Non sanno veramente cosa fanno, poi video a parte, qui in L.A. la scena delle gang si è molto ridotta perché la polizia è stata molto dura con loro.Si ci sono ancora gang che hanno dei territori ma è molto diverso da prima, prima c'era veramente molta violenza e droga, è uno stile di vita che non puoi fingere, chi viene da Beverly Hills o da un bel quartiere e da una famiglia normale non si puoi considerare un G non sanno proprio di che cosa stanno parlando...
Naps – A te piace l'HipHop?
Cab – Per me l'HipHop è l'inizio di tutto io la vedo come un unica cultura, Il writing, breaking e la musica per me vanno mano nella mano, ma non penso che uno debba per forse viverla solo cosi'. Sicuramente amo piu' il vecchio HipHop più di quello d'oggi... nomi come Ultra Magnetic em'cees, Sugar hill gang, Duggie fresh, solo per citarne alcuni, poi amo il breaking! forse perche non ero mai molto bravo, ma quando vedo persone che sanno breakare bene mi fomento ancora!
Naps – Che progetti hai per il futuro?
Cab – Mah solo Dio può sapere cosa mi aspetta nel futuro, Ma sicuramente voglio godermi la vita ed avere cura della mia famiglia specialmente i miei figli e poi continuare a dipingere e viaggiare e conoscere altri writer.

Naps -So Cab tell us what got you involved and when did you start?
Cab -The first graffiti I ever saw was in East Los Angeles,gangs like Primera Flats,,White Fence,,and the Maravillas,old gangs that been around since the 30's here in the L.A area,,it influenced me ,Cholo writing was popular in the late 70's early 80's when I moved to East L.A,a gang and drug infested neighborhood,,I seen allot of violence growing up''it was a tough time,for all of us,,then in 1984,or when the movie Beat street,came out,,everything changed,,I started breaking and popping,as a breaker,my name was "Raven,86 I only tagged my neiborhood alleys at the time,fueled by that movie,shit it blew my mind,the whole hip hop scene in L.A spawned a wave of graffiti,taggers,I was one of them,,I had some artistic skills,but not graffiti,its wasent till 1987,,in L.A the bus tagging was big,,we in L.A, had busses only to get up,through out the city,that was my beggining,,in Jr. high I met a few guys from "TNT"OTR"their was so many,other crews ,but I chilled with the TNT's, they showed me what was up with the racking of markers,paint ect..then in 1988,I started writting CAB,,started to bomb insted,,their was more land to cover,,and to get noticed,or get some respect from my old school buddies,who were already up''was a challenge to me,,I did bomb hard,I came up Bombing'witch is the essential most importaint part of graffiti,throw-ups' and tags, were my best friends,,my soul mission in life at the time was to rack as much paint as I could and,paint every night,I was living with mom and dad,at the time,with no job,or direcction in life other than,to bomb...
Naps -What are the names of your crews and what does being in a crew mean for you?
Cab -I'm from a few crews,,I mainly push K2S,and LOD,,Kill to sucseed" and "Lokes on Dope" I rep these crews,to the fullest,my second family,From L.A,,
Naps -You have been in the graff game for so many years now, what keeps you still involved ? and how do you think graff has changed over the years?
Cab -this is a hobbie to me'I like to paint and express myself,,and show my friends what I can do,,with the can,,this has been more of a personal thing to me,,I'ts not a race to see who can paint the most pieces, throw-ups,or tags,,I paint when I can,,I think, I have done enough graff in my last years,,their still allot of things I would like to do,places to travel,before I call it quits,,cause I will stop doing graff someday,I want to go out knowing that I did what I did and proud of it'regardless, of what people think,it dosent matter anymore,,being in this so long,makes you change and grow,street wise,at this point in my life,I been more focused on doing more elaborate pieces,with simple cartoon characters,with allot of color,,I started doing graffiti,as a bomber,,I stepped up my game big time,I was never the piecer,but my life has taken a dramatic direction,I still bomb,here and their,but not like,before,in L.a their is so much new talent,young writers pushing the envelope,,doing some crazy shit just for fame''thats the stuff thats keeps me involved in the graff scene,,the scene out in L.a right now,has allways been big,I havent noticed any change in the last 10 years other than ,the police cracking down on graffiti writers''or vandals,like they call us''were artist.
Naps -Tell us about the L.A graff scene, who besides you is coming out strong and who do you respect?
Cab -the L.A graff, scene,has always been fresh'their allot of new writers doing big things'I been trying to stay bussy' painting, as much as I can'like everybody else,I have respect for for everybody'here in L.A,all crews like,LOD,K2S,STN,AWR,MSK,Seventh Letter,CBS,UTI and so on',but the cats who have been blasting not only L.A but the whole world and expanding their work'on a different level,have been the Seventh Letter cats,,Revok,Rime,Risky,Etc.. their super dope,I have great respect, cause they have put in some fucken major work,big time'that demands respect,their up ''and stayed on top of the game,,its great, they have allot of fans,,that follow their work,and have great influence in the new generation, of graffiti writers here in Los Angeles,and through out the world,,I'm just happy to be such a small part of the whole scene,here in L.A,
Naps -when it comes to style you have really good taste, what are the most important things for you when it comes to style? and what hints would you give to a new comer who was just starting out?
Cab -when it come to style,,I can admire everybodys work,from the most intricate,style to most simple straight letter,its importaint to develope some kind of style,in graffiti' cause you'll be known,for that particular,way of painting'I have allways been a big fan of the straight letter,readable graffiti,with allot of color,stuff that anybody can read,and understand,theirs allot of style in L.A,,some of it is to wild,and some to "Spaggetii" looking that makes you wonder,what it says,,,but to each is own''to the new writer I would say,firts,choose a name,do some research' then start,doing some straight letter,bombing,develop some skill,,incorporate some color,,try to surround your self with people that have been in the game and that know whats up''dont go over anybody'unless you know you can top that piece,or throw-up,stay true,and most importaint respect everybodybut most of all the og's in the game who have paved the way,for cats like you to be be painting today..
Naps -Do you paint other things besides graff or do paint canvas ? Tell us about CabWear?
Cab -I also like to do canvass work,its also vital,as an artist weather you sell or not,to keep on painting,today I paint to decorate my familys living rooms,I sell here and their small pieces'thats keeps me motivated,and ispire me to continue,4 years ago, I started a small company,called CABWEAR' I designed one shirt had it printed,and sold very well,so I designed a few more,and so the company progressed,I made shirts,of all sizes,girls,sweaters, Etc. and even a skateboard,I been fortunate,I have allot of young fans'and friends who have supported me through good and tough times,recently I had an Idea,of making a Ring,,A Crew ring, with the LOD circle,,made like 15 of them and sold them,that has been the latest Item to CaBWEAR,, allot of new projects in the works for CABWEAR, for next year, so stay tunned,
Naps .L.A is known for many things good and bad one of these is also Gangs,I don't know much about them but one thing I do know is that cause of hiphop videos there are many rich kids around the world acting as wanna be “thugs” and as if they where “mean”...what do you think about that?
Cab -L.A is known for its beautyfull girls,and great weather,but also for crime and gangs,L.A has influenced the world in that regard,,many young kids from around the world want to live that lifestyle,of a "CHOLO" or gangster, and comit crime,end up in prison,for their neighborhood,,its all a big mistake'theirs nothing fun,about doing time' you dont have to dress it,or act like a thug,,to get respect here,the whole gang culture has kinda died out,,most gangs still hang out and party,in homes,,they dont kick it in the neighborhood anymore,the police got hard and the gangsters to,and the drug dealing that went on in the streets,so all the rich kids that think their ganster,or thugs,,dont have fucken clue,of whats really going on, the reall shit is in the hood,and you cant fake that, you would have to be raised in the hood to understand,allot things,,not in the comfort of Beverly Hills,Thousand Oaks,Calabasas,or anywhere in the world, it started here in the greater Los Angeles area,,since the 30's,and will never end..
Naps -do you like hiphop?
Cab -Hip Hop'to me is what started this whole movement,,rapping,breaking gave way to the style of graffitti''that influenced the world,Hip hop and graffiti go hand in hand,,Love the music,specially the early stuff,like the ultra magnetic em'cees, Sugar hill gang, duggie fresh, just to name a few,the whole b-boy, breaking scene has been undergroung,mostly,I do enjoy people, breaking and showing their skills,at events,it just blows my mind,its so fresh,I use to break,and pop back in 1985,when I was a kid, humble beginnings
Naps -what plans do you have for the future?
Cab -question 9# the future'' only god knows whats in store for me and my family,I'm gonna work hard and try to enjoy my life with my family and friends,as long as I can,I also would like to continue,traveling ,stay on top of my bussines,and most importaint my kids,
